The Island Defender was built as Hamilton Bailey in 1977 by Chemainus Towing (owned by CIP) and put to work towing logs for the parent company in 1978. CIP sold Chemainus Towing in the early '90's and the towing assets were dispersed. Hamilton bailey was renamed Josie M and transported to the Great Lakes Region aboard a heavy lift ship. She was re-powered and used principally for ship docking duties in and around the Quebec area. In 2001, McKiel Marine purchased the vessel to use in barge towing along the Eastern Seaboard. North Arm Transportation eventually purchased and repatriated her to the West Coast as the North Arm Defiant.
In July 2004 she was purchased by Island Tug and Barge. Now operating as the Island Defender, she is kept busy with coastal barge towing and harbour assist duties.
