Island Tug and Barge Ltd. of Vancouver, British Columbia has a long history of serving coastal communities up and down the west coast. With expertise in general and specialized cargoes such as bulk fuel delivery, ITB is known for a high level of service and professionalism.

Island Tug and Barge is B.C.'s only domestic supplier of submarine laying services. It is also the largest supplier of bulk fuel products to Vancouver Island.

Island Tug and Barge's commitment to safety is shown by their dedication to follow the ISM Code. The ISM Code is a safety management program established by the International Maritime Organization. It is required by all shipping where vessels exceed 500 gross tons. The Code is not required by law for ITB operations, however, they have taken it on because it sets a high standard for seamanship and management practices that puts ITB in line with the best practices of the sea-going industry.

The code requires that a series of management practices be in place that enable:

  • A safe working environment
  • The prevention of pollution
  • Maintenance of a seaworthy vessel
  • Safe sea-going practices
  • Control of operation critical information

Island Tug and Barge's commitment to customer service is shown by their dedication to follow ISO 9001 - 2000 standards, These standards are aimed at improving the company's ability to meet or exceed a customer's expectations of service every time. The ISO standard requires a thorough analysis of all of the systems that contribute to the successful provision of a service.

Internal and external auditing are an important component of the process. The verification of Island Tug and Barge's standards by a reputed third-party, Lloyds Register Quality Assurance says to customers, ITB is a well-managed company capable of achieving a high level of performance safety and with little risk to the environment.

In April 2005 Island Tug was the first Canadian tug and barge company to be awarded the Exceptional Compliance Program Award (ECOPRO) from Washington State Department of Ecology for excellence in marine safety and environmental stewardship.
